The aid defense action is a standard action that allows a character to grant a bonus to another character's defenses against a target.[PH:287][RC:238]

The character chooses an adjacent enemy, and an ally. Before the end of the character's next turn, the next time the enemy makes an attack against the ally, the ally receives a +2 bonus to all defenses against that attack.

A single character cannot use the aid defense action to affect the same ally's defenses more than once. Under normal circumstances, up to four characters can each use an aid defense action to affect the same ally's defenses.

Before the May 2010 update, the aid attack and aid defense actions were included as alternative uses of the aid another action. Also, both aid attack and aid defense required the character to make a melee basic attack against AC 10 to have an effect.
