The background is a roleplaying element, which provides potential hooks and interest beyond a simple cookie-cutter character.

When first introduced in the player's handbook, it was solely a means of flavor, with a few generic questions.  There are two sets of questions, first found in the Player's Handbook, and the other in the Rules Compendium, both of which are meant to make sure the character is integreated in the world.

Starting with Player's Handbook 2, the background may also be used to obtain one mechanical bonus: [PH2:178]

  • Gain a +2 bonus to checks with a skill associated with the background.
  • Gain a +1 bonus to checks with two skills associated with your background.[Dr383:79]
  • Add a skill associated with your background to your class skill list (before choosing trained skills)
  • Choose one language connected to your background, and learn to speak, read, write that language fluently.
  • In a campaign setting that offers regional benefits, you can obtain the associated regional benefit. This is normally the case for Forgotten Realms or Scales of War characters.
