Warlock is an arcane class in Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition, and it was introduced as one of the original classes from the Player's Handbook. There are three warlock subclasses: original warlock, a striker,[PH:129] hexblade, also a striker,[HotFK:200] and binder, a controller.[HoS:63]

Class traits[]

The following traits are common to original warlocks, hexblades, and binders.

A 1st-level warlock begins with hit points equal to a high number plus the warlock's Constitution score, and healing surges per day equal to moderate amount plus the warlock's Constitution modifier. A warlock gains a moderate amount of hit points per level.

A 1st-level warlock begins with rod and wand implement proficiency. Pact blades can also be used as implements for warlock powers.

Original warlock[]

The original warlock is the subclass of warlock introduced in the Player's Handbook.[PH:129] An update to the original warlock was published as a standalone document in July 2011, with changes summarized in the July 2011 update.

An original warlock receives a minor bonus to Reflex and Will defenses.

An original warlock is trained in any four skills from the original warlock class skill list.

Original warlocks gain the following class features at 1st level:

Eldritch Blast[]

Original warlocks know two 1st-level at-will attack powers. One at-will attack is either eldritch blast or eldritch strike. Eldritch blast counts as a ranged basic attack, and eldritch strike counts as a melee basic attack. The other at-will attack is determined by the choice for Eldritch Pact.

Eldritch Pact[]

Original warlocks choose one of the following options at 1st level. Each option grants one starting at-will spell. Additionally, warlocks benefit from a pact boon when an enemy under their Warlock's Curse is reduced to 0 hit points or fewer. Each option also provides bonuses to certain warlock powers, as specified in those powers' descriptions.

Pact At-will spell Pact boon (when cursed enemy is reduced to 0 or fewer hit points)
Dark pact spiteful glamor [FRPG:35] Darkspiral Aura: The point value of the warlock's Darkspiral Aura increases by a minor amount.

The warlock can use Darkspiral Aura as an immediate interrupt when targeted by an enemy's melee or ranged attack. Darkspiral Aura deals necrotic and psychic damage (increases at 11th level and 21st level) per point value. If it dealt less than a high amount of damage, its point value returns to 0. If it dealt a high amount of damage or more, the warlock can cause the enemy to be weakened for the triggering attack, and Darkspiral Aura's point value returns to a minor amount. Darkspiral Aura's point value is initially 0, and returns to 0 when the warlock takes a short or extended rest.[FRPG:35][U :1/2009]

Elemental pact chromatic bolt [HotEC:102] The pact boon depends on the warlock's current elemental affinity. The warlock's elemental affinity is determined randomly after each rest by rolling d10. The warlock can also change force, necrotic, poison, or psychic damage on an arcane attack power the warlock uses to the damage type matching the elemental affinity.

Accursed Affinity: The next enemy the warlock places a Warlock's Curse on gains a moderate amount of vulnerable per tier (increases at 11th level and 21st level) to the damage type matching the warlock's current elemental affinity until the curse ends. This vulnerability adds to any existing vulnerability.[HotEC:97]

Fey pact eyebite [PH:132][U :W] Misty Step: The warlock can immediately teleport a moderate amount of squares as a free action.[PH:130][U :W]
Infernal pact gift to Avernus [Dr386:46] or hellish rebuke[PH:132][U :W] Dark One's Blessing: The warlock immediately gains temporary hit points equal to the warlock's level.[PH:131][U :W]
Sorcerer-king pact hand of blight [DSCS:94] Fell Scorn: The warlock starts each encounter with one usage of fell might, the maximum number of usages available at one time. Fell Might is used to augment powers with a Sorcerer-King Pact rider.

The warlock must choose whether to spend fell might when using a power, before making any attack rolls or applying any effects. If a creature affected by your Warlock's Curse drops to 0 hit points, the use of fell might is regained.[DSCS:94]

Star pact dire radiance [PH:131][U :W] Fate of the Void: The warlock gains a minor bonus to any single d20 roll the warlock makes during the warlock's next turn (attack roll, saving throw, skill check, or ability check). This bonus is cumulative, but expires at the end of the warlock's next turn.[PH:131][U :W]
Vestige pact eyes of the vestige [AP:73] The pact boon depends on the warlock's current active vestige. The warlock selects either King Elidyr or Zutwa as an active vestige at the end of a short or extended rest.

King Elidyr Pact Boon: One ally adjacent to the warlock gains a minor bonus to all defenses until the end of the warlock's next turn.

Zutwa Pact Boon: The warlock's Prime Shot is improved to grant a moderate bonus to attack rolls until the end of the warlock's next turn.[AP:73]

You can also gain temporary access to other vestiges by using certain daily attack powers. When you use one such power, you may immediately switch to the new vestige, which will remain in effect until using another daily attack power or until the end of the encounter. Access to the vestige must be done at the moment of using the attack power.

Prime Shot[]

Main article: Prime Shot

If none of your allies are nearer to your target than you are, you receive a minor bonus to ranged attack rolls against that target.

Warlock's Curse[]

Once per turn as a minor action, you can place a Warlock's Curse on the enemy nearest to you that you can see. A cursed enemy is more vulnerable to your attacks. If you hit a cursed enemy with an attack, you deal a dice roll per tier extra damage. You decide whether to apply the extra damage after making the damage roll. You can deal this extra damage once per turn.

A Warlock's Curse remains in effect until the end of the encounter or until the cursed enemy drops to 0 hit points or fewer.

You can place a Warlock's Curse on multiple targets over the course of an encounter; each curse requires the use of a minor action. You can't place a Warlock's Curse on a creature that is already affected by your or another character's Warlock's Curse.

Hexblade[]

Hexblade is the subclass of warlock introduced in Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms.[HotFK:201]

A hexblade receives a minor bonus to Fortitude and Will defenses.

A 1st-level hexblade begins with cloth, leather, hide, and chainmail armor proficiencies, and simple melee, military melee, and simple ranged weapon proficiencies.

A hexblade is trained in any four skills from the hexblade class skill list.

Hexblades choose the elemental pact, the fey pact, the gloom pact, the infernal pact, or the star pact. The choice of pact determines the benefits of the hexblade's Pact Boon, Pact Reward, Pact Weapon, Improved Pact Weapon, Pact Weapon Retribution, Summon Warlock's Ally, and Greater Summon Warlock's Ally features. Hexblades only gain encounter attack powers from their pact weapon features, rather than choosing encounter attack powers as they level as original warlocks do. In addition, hexblades gain the Eldritch Bolt class feature at 1st level, the Superior Warlock's Ally class feature at 17th level, and master of magic instead of choosing a utility power at 22nd level.

Greater Summon Warlock's Ally
At 25th level, instead of replacing a daily attack power, a gloom pact hexblade gets the option to summon a titan warrior with summon warlock's ally. Warlock feats[]

These feats have the warlock class, or hybrid/multiclass warlock, as a prerequisite. Additional prerequisites are noted.

A warlock may choose a maximum of one feats tagged with lesser Pact, and one with Greater Pact. These feats are normally available to with the Sorcerer-King Pact.

Multiclass warlocks[]

Characters who did not start as warlocks and who do not already have a multiclass feat of a type other than multiclass warlock may multiclass as warlocks by taking one of the following entry feats.

Warlock entry feat Prerequisites Benefits
Binding Initiate [Dr400]

The character becomes trained in any skill from the binder class skill list. The character chooses a binder pact, and gains that pact's Pact Boon at-will powers as encounter powers.

Pact Encounter attack power Encounter utility power
Gloom pact echoing dirge shadow warp
Star pact mind shadows hidden lore
Pact Initiate [PH:208] Cha 13
Pact Encounter attack power
Dark pact spiteful glamor
Elemental pact chromatic bolt
Fey pact eyebite
Infernal pact gift to Avernus or
hellish rebuke
Sorcerer-king pact hand of blight
Star pact dire radiance
Vestige pact eyes of the vestige

The character becomes trained in any skill from the original warlock class skill list. The character chooses an original warlock pact, and gains that pact's 1st-level at-will attack power as an encounter power. The character counts as having that pact for the purpose of meeting requirements for paragon paths.

Student of Malediction [AP:136] Con 13
Cha 13
The character can use the Warlock's Curse class feature once per encounter. The curse ends the first time it deals extra damage.

In addition, each warlock entry feat grants all of the following benefits:

  • The character counts as a warlock, in addition to his or her original class, for the purpose of meeting prerequisites for feats, paragon paths, etc.
  • The character gains implement proficiency with warlock implements (rods, wands, and pact blades).[U :11/2009]
  • The character may take Novice Power, Acolyte Power, and Adept Power feats to exchange powers for warlock powers.
  • If the character takes a multiclass encounter, a multiclass utility, and a multiclass daily feat (such as Novice, Acolyte, and Adept Power), the character can paragon multiclass in warlock instead of taking a paragon path. Paragon multiclassed warlocks select additional warlock powers instead of paragon path powers, and may take the Walker in Gloom[AP:136] feat to gain the Shadow Walk class feature.

Hybrid original warlocks[]

A character may be created as a hybrid of original warlock and another class other than warlock. The hybrid warlock bonus to defense is either +1 Reflex or +1 Will. The hybrid's warlock class features are Eldritch Pact (hybrid), which counts as having a pact but does not grant its associated at-will power or pact boon, and Warlock's Curse (hybrid), which is the same as Warlock's Curse except that it deals extra damage only when a warlock power or warlock paragon path power hits a cursed enemy.

When a hybrid warlock gains the Hybrid Talent feat, he or she chooses one hybrid talent option from either of his or her hybrid classes. The warlock hybrid talent options are:

Prime Shot
The hybrid warlock gains the Prime Shot warlock class feature.
Shadow Walk
The hybrid warlock gains the Shadow Walk warlock class feature.
Warlock Pact Boon
The hybrid warlock gains the pact boon associated with his or her pact.[PH3:153]

Hybrid binders[]

A character may be created as a hybrid of binder and another class other than warlock. The hybrid binder bonus to defense is either +1 Reflex or +1 Will. The hybrid's binder class features are Pact Boon, which replaces the 1st-level warlock at-will attack power with the two at-will powers associated with the gloom pact or star pact, and Shadow Twist (hybrid), which is the same as Shadow Twist except that it only grants a bonus to attack rolls on warlock powers and warlock paragon path powers.

When a hybrid binder gains the Hybrid Talent feat, he or she chooses one hybrid talent option from either of his or her hybrid classes. The binder hybrid talent option is:

Shadow Walk

Warlock overview[]

Warlocks channel arcane might wrested from primeval entities. They commune with infernal intelligences and fey spirits, scour enemies with potent blasts of eldritch power, and bedevil foes with hexing curses. Armed with esoteric secrets and dangerous lore, warlocks are clever and resourceful foes.

However you came to your arcane knowledge, you need not accept the poor reputation warlocks sometimes endure. You could be a libram-toting scholar captivated by ominous lore, a foot-loose wanderer searching for elusive ultimate truths, a devil-touched hunter using infernal spells to eliminate evil, or even a black-clad mercenary who uses sinister trappings to discourage prying strangers and unwanted attention. On the other hand, you could be a true diabolist using your gifts to tyrannize the weak—some warlocks unfortunately are exactly that.

The pacts are complete. The rites have concluded. The signs are drawn in blood, and the seals are broken. Your destiny beckons.

Characteristics[]

You have excellent short-ranged attack ability, and your powers confuse or weaken your opponent. You can shift easily from ranged attacks to melee attacks. However, you are not very resilient and rely on powers of evasion and concealment to avoid attack.

Religion[]

Warlocks favor deities of cleverness, arcane power, or secrets. These include Corellon, Ioun, and Sehanine. Evil warlocks often revere Asmodeus or Vecna.

Races[]

Tieflings and gnomes are exemplary warlocks by nature, as they both give bonuses to Intelligence and Charisma. Eladrin excel as Fey warlocks. Dragonborn, half-elves, and humans make formidable warlocks as well.

Warlock magic items[]

  • Quickcurse Rod (2+ uncommon): Allows placing an additional warlock curse as a free action. (Errata limits this to hitting with the rod.)
  • Rod of Flaying (24)
