The Blood War is an ancient battle that had raged for countless millennia between the demons of the Infinite Layers of the Abyss and the devils of the Nine Hells of Baator. It was fought across numerous worlds, the Astral Sea and, on rare occassion, the Abyss and the Nine Hells itself.

A long time ago, the archangel Asmodeus sought out and found the Shard of Evil at the heart of the Abyss. He stole a sliver of the shard, and forged it into ruby-tipped rod of incredible power that he used to slew his master, the god now only known as He Who Was. Asmodeus then became the god over the new realm of the Nine Hells. Since then, Asmodeus has hungered to steal an even more powerful fragment of the Shard of Evil, and driven by abyssal instinct, the demon lords has sought to reclaim the fragment that Asmodeus stole and return it to its resting place. This conflict became known as the Blood War.

In recent centuries, the endless battle of the Blood War has devolved into a sullen truce as a result of changes in circumstances among the archdevils and demon lords.
