How exactly do healing surges work within the D&D world?
ex: in real life, how does one like me use a healing surge?
if its magic based shouldnt it be restricted to just spellcasters?

- Good question. The temporary hit point article touches on the topic of hit points being an abstraction. That is, hit points (and, by extension, healing) means anything, physical, mental or otherwise, the player or DM can imagine as coming between the character and death. That's how we got warlords, a martial power based class that heals with a pep talk, and warforged getting healing surges.
